Bouncing Through Time: The History of Bouncy Castles
Bouncy castles, also known as inflatable castles or bounce houses, have become a staple at children's parties and events worldwide. These inflatable structures provide endless fun and have an intriguing history that dates back to the mid-20th century.
The Birth of the Bounce
In 1959, John Scurlock, a mechanical engineer from Shreveport, Louisiana, was experimenting with inflatable covers for tennis courts. He noticed that his employees enjoyed jumping on these air-filled structures, sparking the idea for an inflatable play structure. This led to the creation of the first inflatable structure designed solely for entertainment purposes, which he called the "Space Walk."

From Space Walks to Moon Walks
The original "Space Walk" was essentially a large inflatable mattress without sides or a roof. As the concept gained popularity, safety enhancements were made, including adding walls and a roof, transforming it into what many referred to as a "Moon Walk," inspired by the moon landing era.
Expansion and Commercialization
Recognizing the potential of this invention, John Scurlock and his wife, Frances, founded the company "Space Walk" in 1959. They began manufacturing and renting out these inflatable structures for events such as birthday parties, school fairs, and company picnics. Their son, Frank Scurlock, later expanded the business, introducing indoor inflatable play parks and further popularizing the concept.

Evolution of Design
Over the years, bouncy castles have evolved significantly. Modern designs feature various themes, including castles, slides, obstacle courses, and interactive games. Advancements in materials and manufacturing have led to more durable and safer inflatables, making them suitable for a wide range of events and age groups.
